Nonstop Trains Global Trips

The Covid-19 pandemic ground world travels to a halt, and David Feng’s family was not spared. Following a few years of preparation post-pandemic, though, they’re back — and launching their Global Trips from 2025.

It’s not your usual round-the-world ticket. The ultimate goal is to travel to every single country or territory with a railway system — be it national rail, metro, or tram. Because it’s a family trip, there’ll be a mix of what interests everyone…

  • for David himself, the railway network, stations, trains, and how they contribute to a sustainable transport network
  • for the wife, great views, interesting scenic spots, places with good food, and where to find relaxation
  • and for the next generation… places that excites kids, from museums to play centres and more…

A rail journey should be more than going from A to B. And it should be as much as for train geeks as it is for everyone else — and the Global Trips, in-person Trains + Holidays with David Feng + Family — is all about travelling the world — but with a rail focus.

To qualify, just like a traditional round-the-world flight ticket, travel must involve crossing the two oceans in one, irreversible direction — both the Atlantic, and the Pacific — and the journey should start and end in the same region.

The following are considered part of the same region:

  • EU/EEA countries, Switzerland, and the UK
  • Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan

These Global Trips are generally done for touristic reasons, ie: as part of, or actually being the entirety, of a holiday, for our family. However, in places where the relevant immigration/employment rules allow it for the concerned family members (eg: Switzerland), there might be some public or professional events (such as talks) related closely to trains.

Why Global Trips?

Who doesn’t love a good round-the-world ticket? Too often, though, planes over-dominate the journey, and the heavy and city rail networks that connect the cities are sometimes left out.

Rather than have someone else shift gears for you on a polluting touristy megabus, the idea of our Global Trips is to pull out your phone — and buy a local rail ticket — thus allowing us to explore at our pace. Many travellers say that your trip is much more integrated locally — and you get to discover more with locals — if you travel using public transport.

The Nonstop Trains Global Trips doesn’t ban non-rail travel — indeed, across oceans, it’s likely we could fly. A rental car or rideshares could also come into play in places without an established rail system. But the round-the-world travel now is seen as connecting one rail network with the other. In other words, as much as we can, we fly to take the train, then make onward rail connections as well.

We are a Swiss + Chinese family of world citizens, always interested in other cultures. We’re not “loud”, touristy types (and you won’t find us with a huge camera or dressed in overly “touristy” attire); we prefer trips off the beaten path. And where “touristy” places (such as Venice) inevitably end up on our radar, we try to visit them during the quieter months.
